Don't Tone Alone CIC starts in 2007 with our Founder, Chris Robertson.
Having completed an undergraduate degree in Pharmaceutical Science, Chris worked in a care home for older people with dementia and mental ill-health. It was there he received training from Admiral Nurses and completed NVQs in health and social care. However, towards the end of an 18-month period, Chris decided he wanted to do more for older people and started a Masters degree in Health and Community.
Around the same time, his great aunt was diagnosed with vascular dementia and Chris started caring more at home between university and shift work. He noticed that caring for a loved one was significantly different than when he was a care worker. The situation was far more emotionally charged, and not only were there personal challenges that had to be met with patience and understanding, but familial ones too as roles changed and family dynamics altered.
Things started to change
Chris noted his health and mental well-being changed - as did those other family members in caring roles. Where personal health and fitness routines had been part of daily life, they now took second and even third place in a hierarchy of familial and caring duties.
Taking ownership of health
Chris has always had an enthusiasm for strength, conditioning, health and fitness. It has helped him through difficult times and to excel in better circumstances. Chris started working as a personal trainer shortly after the passing of his great aunt. This was usually at weekends and evenings outside of other professional roles. He gathered many qualifications in his spare time, including advanced diplomas in nutrition and weight management as well as specialist exercise credentials.
Time to make a difference
After working for various third sector organisations, managing project teams, designing and delivering training programmes, Don’t Tone Alone CIC was born from Chris' desire to meet the needs of carers and those who struggle hardest in our society and to help them have access to the positive benefits of health and fitness.
Chris has built a team of highly qualified and experienced trainers whose greatest attributes are their open-mindedness, ability to solve problems, and connect empathetically with the beneficiaries they work with. A Don’t Tone Alone CIC trainer is more than an exercise professional; they listen, understand, implement sustainable solutions, and transform lives.
